To this author, when trawling several months ago through Lego Ideas, I never thought that this project would be given the green light. Why? Licensing.. perhaps lack of marketability in Lego HQ eyes.. who knows. But here it is…
Soon we will all be able to have a Lego John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and their infamous yellow submarine.
Lego announced its set of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine on Wednesday. The set comes with over 550 pieces to construct the iconic submarine and the mini figures of the band members featuring the same hairstyles, outfits, and accessories that were seen in the movie.
The project came to life after being reaching the 10,000 vote minimum on Lego Ideas, Lego company’s community ideas section. The 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine inspired the creation, according to the site.
The set is going to retail for about $60 in the US, so expect to pay close to $90 in Australia.
Kevin Szeto, the set’s initial designer, said his inspiration came from being an amateur musician and songwriter who has always been “drawn to the music of The Beatles.”
“The creation of the Yellow Submarine model was really my way of showing my affection for The Beatles, as well as trying to pay a small tribute to The Beatles phenomenon,” Szeto said. “The Yellow Submarine is bright, fun, and colourful, which also made it a good subject to translate into Lego form.”
Justin Ramsden, the Lego designer who refined the original model, said “I watched the film when I was younger and was really inspired by how it oozed so much imagination—comparable to how I view Lego elements,” Ramsden added. “I’m also a massive fan of The Beatles having grown up with their music all my life so to see The Beatles in Lego form is a dream come true.”
The Yellow Submarine set will be available for sale at Lego Stores, shop.lego.com, and select other retailers next month.
